Gaining access to an interpreter is simple and straight forward. Working effectively with an interpreter is another matter altogether. The MAGNUS Language Valet has several training options from which you can choose.
For people who are experienced in working with interpreters or who have participated in either an In-Person or DVD training session, our Free Quick Start Guide provides a good overview of the key points to remember. Please contact us to order more copies for your staff.
For people who have unpredictable schedules, limited time to learn, or who will have only an occasional need to work with interpreters, our Training DVD provides an excellent overview of the Language Valet and how to work with interpreters. All of the important points are covered, including how to obtain assistance in identifying an unknown language, and examples are given. This option also works well for new hires, as an interim training measure, until they are able to participate in an In-Person session.
For organizations which routinely work with many LEP clients from one culture or a small number of patients from several different cultures, we suggest scheduling In-Person training sessions. In these sessions we cover:
-
Procedures to access an interpreter
-
Protocols which have been established to improve the efficiency of interpreter assisted interactions.
-
Tips which help make the encounter a positive and productive experience
-
Plenty of time for Q & A
An optional component is a review of Title VI and language access laws. In this short segment, the requirement to provide interpreters is discussed and the legal foundation of language access laws is reviewed.
